Canine Lipoma - 2 |

Lipomas usually grow slowly. Inside the lipoma, the cells are well-formed and
recognizable. It is easy to determine that the cells are fat cells when they are viewed under a microscope. When the cells are not well-differentiated, or "anaplastic", the tumor is more likely to metastasize. The dark marking you see here is due to the tumor rubbing on the ground because of it's size. Lipomas can be removed surgically, but this is only necessary if the tumor grows to sufficient size to restrict movement, or if the owner wants it removed for cosmetic reasons. Dr. Bock is removing this tumor because it is large enough to restrict the dog's movement. |
